i read this today in my copy of time out new york

i wrote this in response:

dear time out new york,

in his article “exit stage right,” (tony issue 686) adam feldman writes: “the current absolutism about gay marriage strikes me as reductive and unfair. the inevitable comparison to miscegenation laws ignores several important differences, including the centrality of religious faith to the marriage question.”

mr. feldman, i take issue with your comment for several reasons. while there is a religious institution called “marriage,” there is also a civil one with the same name. there are many elements of civil marriage that are incompatible with religious marriage. for example, while many churches will not marry people of different faiths, these types of marriages are allowed in the secular world. it is hypocritical of the religious to impose their beliefs on civil marriage, which should be allowed for all as we do have a separation of church and state.

secondly, the bible was often used to justify segregation and prevent interracial marriages so your assertion that there is no comparison between the battle for gay marriage and interracial marriage is false.

it is unfortunate mr. eckern lost his job over his donation to prop 8, but keep in mind jeff whitty and marc shaiman did not call for his termination. they were rightly angered that a man who made his money from the labors of gays and lesbians would vote against them. and mr. eckern’s position that gays should be okay with civil unions smacks of ignorance. there are marked differences between civil unions and marriages, namely civil union rights are not portable from state to state. and by having two different terms it sends a message that gay unions are not equal to straight ones and this is anathema to the gay rights movement.
